Stick to Staff: Discover the history of hiking sticks, from the shepherds to Teddy Roosevelt. Learn uses for hiking sticks other than walking. Learn how to find and select your own personalized walking stick. A real make-and-take class. (Bring a carbon knife or a sturdy knife)

Building a Wildlife Box:This course is completely hands-on. Participants will build a Flicker nest box.

Miniature Twig Furniture: Create a miniature twig chair for you favorite doll or teddy bear from natural growing sticks. Learn basic twig construction techniques from an experienced twigger. Class will cover tools, adhesives and twig selection. (Additional $20.00 instructional fee.) This class will begin at 4:30 p.m., break for dinner then continue to complete project after dinner.

NWTF DAY WORKSHOP SCHEDULE (Sessions subject to change)

Introduction to Fly- Fishing: It’s all in the wrist! This course will introduce participants to basic equipment and techniques used for fly- fishing in Michigan, with hands-on use of equipment. If you choose to wet the line, a valid Michigan fishing license is required.

Basic Kayaking: Learn the basics, including equipment, strokes, moving around, rollover techniques and even self-rescue (just in case). Practice your new skills on beautiful Lake Nettie.

Basic Shotgun: Course objective: To teach the basic knowledge skills and attitude for the safe and proper use of a shotgun in shooting a moving target. This course is taught by a NRA certified instructor and will cover the following: shotgun knowledge and safe handling. Ammunition knowledge and fundamentals of shotgun shooting. Firing the first shot (actual range time) and gun cleaning & proper storage. All equipment will be provided.

Basic Archery: Participants will learn the proper methods of fitting, selecting, and using archery equipment for both field archery and bowhunting. A range will be set up for students to practice shooting skills.

Plant Identification: Is the plant edible or common to your area? When you complete this course, you will be able to answer this question and more about identification of plants and trees.

Boat Trailoring: Learn how to back the boat and motor at the launch, load and unload the boat from the trailer and boating safety and laws. General boat maintenance and a checklist you should have before leaving the boat launch.

Birdwatching: You will learn the B I G M A C pneumonic method of identifying birds. The course will offer birdwatching opportunities along with information about birdwatching equipment, such as binoculars and spotting scopes.

Nature Photography: Learn the basic fundamentals of outdoor photography. You will learn equipment use, exposure, technique, and have the opportunity to view an assortment of cameras.

Upland Bird Hunting: Discuss habitat specifics, gun and ammunition selection, and the use of gun dogs in upland bird hunting. A mock hunt is included to demonstrate dog points, flushing tactics and bird habitat. Focus on types of hunting breeds and their traditional uses.

Fly-Tying: This class will compliment the Beginning Fly-Fishing class for those interested in creating their own replicas of functional flies. However, the Fly-Fishing class is not a prerequisite for Fly-Tying.

Basic Pistol: Course objective: To teach the basic knowledge, skills and attitude for the safe and proper use of a pistol in shooting a stationary target. This course is taught by a certified NRA instructor and will cover the following: Pistol knowledge and safe handling, Ammunition knowledge and fundamentals of pistol shooting. Firing the first shots (actual range time) and gun cleaning and proper storage. All equipment will be provided.

Scuba Diving: Have an opportunity to try scuba diving in a pool. Basics of Scuba Diving and a demonstration on the techniques of equipment handling will be given. You should not have any respiratory problems and should be comfortable in the water. This session will be limited to eight persons, 4 at a time in the pool. You need to give approximate men’s T-shirt size and men’s shoe size. Additional cost of $25.00 to cover equipment.

"Staying Found" Map & Compass: Getting lost in the woods will no longer be a threat to your outdoor adventure plans. In this course, you will learn how to read a compass and topographic maps. You will use these skills to compass to a destination.

Trapping: Topics covered include: equipment, methods, laws, ethics and basic furbearer biology. Participants will spend time in the classroom and in the field learning firsthand by actually checking a tripling.

Taxidermy: An introduction to techniques of preserving wildlife in an artistic manner.

Shooting Clays: Here’s your chance to try your hand at shooting sporting clays with the assistance of an instructor. Session I course C, or hunter education, or significant firearm experience required as a prerequisite. Ammo & Shotgun are not provided.

Beyond Band-Aids: Learn what to do if a mishap occurs while you and your companions are miles from medical help. Learn basic first aid for minor injuries, as well as lifesaving tips for serious injuries.

NWTF Weekend Package at NettieBay Lodge continues ...

Self-Defense Seminar: Karate is wonderful to learn, but takes years of practice to be good at it. You will learn simple moves that are easy to do and remember; they will show you some self-defense for a beginner that works.

Soap Making is FUN! This soapmaking demonstration is being conducted purely for your enjoyment. Perhaps seeing how soap is made may spark an interest for some of you and you may end up making your own specialty soaps someday.

Rafting the Sturgeon: Raft the Sturgeon River. Not whitewater, but exciting and challenging with its quick current, numerous sharp turns and narrow passages. Lunch will be included at the Subway in Indian River.
